Configuration Guidelines

This section provides guidelines of what you need to know to configure a session. The required information depends on the selected connection method. (See Connection Methods).

The illustrations and the details are based on manual configuration. Much of the required information applies to both manual and Wizard configuration. For more information, see Overview of Manual Configuration and Overview of Wizard Configuration.

The topics of this section are  General Configuration,  and XDMCP .

See also Advanced Configuration for advanced session features.

General Configuration

General is one of the configuration dialogs when creating or editing a session: SSH, rlogin, rsh, rexec, rsh, command, or telnet. The dialog for XDMCP is described further down in

Following are descriptions of the information requested by this dialog.

The available connections are SSH, command, rexec, rlogin, rsh, telnet and XDMCP.

For more information, see Connection Methods.

A name is required for each session. Typically, the name of the session is based on the name of the host to which the session will connect. For example, if the name of the host is Xserver, the name of the session could be named Xserver.

Multiple sessions configured to access one host can be given the same name; X-Win32 will not cross-reference the sessions. Also, tools are provided to help identify the sessions. For more information, see View Sessions.

The host is the server name or IP address to which the session will connect.

The port that the remote host is listening on.  The default value is the well known port number of the specified protocol.  Only change this number if you know that the remote host is listening on a different port for your connection.

The login name is used to access the host.

Specify the application which will be run once the connection is made.  If using Wizard, a default xterm command will be provided to open up a terminal emulator, which is suitable for most users. Otherwise, if using Manual configuration, the command will have to be entered.  Any application on your remote system can be executed via the command field.  For advanced commands see Session Command Line Options

The password is used to access the host.

If the connection method is rsh, a password will not be requested.

XDMCP Dialog

This section describes the dialog window when creating or editing an XDMCP session.

A name is required for each session. Typically, the name of the session is based on the name of the host to which the session will connect. For example, if the name of the host is Xserver, the name of the session could be names Xserver.

Multiple sessions configured to access one host can be given the same name; X-Win32 will not cross-reference the sessions. Also, tools are provided to help identify the sessions. For more information, see View Session.

Three modes are available for XDMCP: Query, Broadcast, Indirect. For more information, see About Connection Methods.

The host is the remote client to which the X server will connect.   Multiple hosts can be selected by pressing the "..." button to the right of the "Host" field and adding the extra hosts.

If multiple monitors are connected to your workstation, you can specify which monitor to display the XDMCP connection. More than one XDMCP connection can be delivered to one monitor.

The maximum number of monitors is dependent on your Windows operating system and your workstation.
