xwin32.exe Application Error 0xc0000142

Windows Error Message: xwin32.exe – Application Error

When attempting to start X-Win32, you may receive the following error in a Windows dialog box:

xwin32.exe - Application Error<br>
===================
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application.

[OK]

NOTE: If the error message does not refer to xwin32.exe, then you need to contact the vendor of your application, as StarNet can only support our own products (e.g. X-Win32). For example, if you get this error starting Microsoft Word, then you should contact Microsoft; if you get this error starting Adobe Acrobat, then you need to contact Adobe.

Typically this error has nothing to do with X-Win32 and instead indicates one of the following problems:

  1. There is a problem with an anti-virus program preventing X-Win32 from starting (such as McAfee) – You can try temporarily disabling your anti-virus software to see if the error goes away
  2. There is a problem with your system memory – We have had several customers report that after reducing system memory or replacing system memory that the problem goes away
  1. There is a problem with the memory controller on your motherboard (chipset) or your CPU – If you eliminate anti-virus and memory as a problem, then this is quite possibly the problem

    Less likely than the above, it is possible that X-Win32 has been corrupted (specificially, xwin32.exe is corrupt), perhaps due to a partially failing storage device (e.g. hard drive); you can try uninstalling and reinstalling, but if your hard drive is failing then the new install may be similarly corrupt.

    Finally, if you still cannot resolve the problem and your problem is specifically with X-Win32 (if you don’t know what X-Win32 is, then X-Win32 is not the problem), then you can request support with the links on this page.
