Sunnyvale – March 11, 2009: StarNet Communications of Sunnyvale, California, a leading developer of Windows/Linux/UNIX connectivity solutions, today announced the industry’s first PC X server capable of re-displaying a full remote Unix or Linux console to a Windows desktop. X-Win32 version 9.4 also offers Windows users an innovative new way to connect to a remote host via a secure gateway host.
Unlike traditional PC X server sessions that allow a Windows PC to log into a remote Linux or Unix host and display a Gnome, KDE or CDE desktop, LIVE Console sessions are started from the Linux/Unix machine. “With release 9.4, StarNet is following our customer base. More and more users, especially electronic design engineers and scientists, are migrating from Windows workstations to Linux. However, most need to access their office desktop from home or elsewhere where they only have Windows-based computers,” commented Steven Schoch, co-founder and chief executive officer of StarNet Communications. “LIVE Console significantly increases the productivity of Linux and Solaris users as it extends their office desktop to any Windows computer.”
LIVE Console sessions are a major functional improvement over VNC, which offers the user access to a virtual desktop running within the console desktop but not the native console desktop. “With LIVE Console the user gets to see the exact same truly native Linux/Solaris desktop the way he left it at work,” Schoch said, adding that LIVE Console sessions also offer faster performance over the Internet than VNC sessions as well as better security.
Version 9.4 also allows Windows users to run so-called “LIVE Indirect” sessions in which the Windows-based X server first connects to the company’s secure gateway server. From there, the LIVE Indirect connection automatically makes a secure connection to applications hosted on Linux and Unix servers on the LAN. “Many large companies do not allow their workers to connect directly to application hosts. They have to go through a secure hub. Our LIVE Indirect sessions make this process transparent and automatic,” Schoch said.
X-Win32 9.4 lists at $225.00 (commercial) in volume 1-10. Additional volume discounts are available as well as special pricing for government and educational institutions. X-Win32 9.4 can be downloaded for evaluation from http://www.starnet.com/products/xwin32/download.php
