StarNet Launches Free LIVE Console Software for Linux Workstations

Sunnyvale – March 12, 2009: StarNet Communications of Sunnyvale, California, a leading developer of Windows/Linux/UNIX connectivity solutions, today announced LIVE Console, the first X server solution to allow Linux and Sun Solaris workstation desktops to be re-displayed on Windows PCs.

“LIVE Console dramatically improves productivity of Linux and Solaris users by letting them access their office desktop from home or anywhere they have a Windows PC. Best of all, LIVE Console is free!” said Steven Schoch, co-founder and chief executive officer of StarNet.

LIVE Console is the first in a series of connectivity tools for Linux and Unix-based workstation users.   Besides the redisplay of their desktop LIVE Console offers two additional key functionalities:

• Suspend/Resume Desktop – For security reasons, many companies require desktops be logged out when the user leaves his office for meetings or goes home. That means he has to terminate any running applications. LIVE Console allows the user to log-out of his Linux/Solaris desktop and log back in at a later time while open applications continue to run in the background.
• Simultaneous Multiple User Accounts – With LIVE Console, multiple consoles can be running simultaneously. One user can log out to allow another user to work on a workstation. The first user’s desktop and the applications on it continue to run in the background.
  

Schoch explained that while LIVE Console is available at no cost, StarNet stands to benefit as well because many Linux and Unix users need to reconnect to their Linux and Unix consoles from home or elsewhere using a Windows PC. That will require a copy of StarNet’s flagship X-Win32 PC X server. “We need to follow our customers base, many of which has been migrating to the Linux workstation platform. Most still have Windows computers outside their office, such as at home, in conference rooms, labs and customers sites. LIVE Console offers these users the ability to access their Linux/Unix office desktop from anywhere. The productivity gains from this functionality are obvious.”
